Mark Rutland was named president at Oral Roberts. Rutland was previously the president at Southeastern University in Florida since 1999. During that time, the campus underwent more than $50 million in renovations and construction projects. Enrollment increased from fewer than 1,000 to more than 3,000 for the 2008-09 academic year.

Baseball assistants – Wake Forest named Joe Wilkinsvolunteer assistant baseball coach.

Football assistants – Ashland named Tim Rose assistant football coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Eric Pogue, who just finished his seventh season as assistant coach for the Oakland men’s soccer team, has been named as head coach. … Cal Poly named Lance Thompson men’s soccer coach.

Softball – Bowie State hired Darrell Toney as head softball coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Rhode Island College announced the resignation of men’s tennis coach Joe Testa.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants – Georgia Tech hired Craig Bere as assistant women’s volleyball coach.

Associations

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics has promoted Bob Vecchione to deputy executive director.

 

Deaths

Steven Archer, a sophomore track and field student-athlete at Charlotte, died February 2. Archer suffered an apparent cardiac arrest while playing in a recreational basketball game.

Former Samford President Thomas E. Corts, who led the university for 23 years before retiring in 2006, died February 4. He was 67.
