Donovan Rose was elevated to head coach at Hampton. The 18-year veteran of the program succeeds Jerry Holmes, who was released. A 1979 graduate of the school, Rose was an all-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association performer and conference defensive player of the year as a senior. He played professionally in the NFL and the Canadian Football League, winning the Grey Cup as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984, before retiring in 1988

Other transactions

Presidents and chancellors – Oral Roberts selected Mark Rutland as president, effective in July. The president at Southeastern University for the past 10 years, Rutland succeeds Richard L. Roberts, who resigned in November 2007, and interim president Ralph Fagin.

Coaches

Baseball assistantsPat Kimutis was chosen as a volunteer assistant coach at Temple. Kimutis was a four-year starter at Duquesne and batted a team-high .361 as a senior in 2008 … Texas A&M elevated Matt Deggs to associate head coach. Deggs is in his fourth season was third base coach and is in charge of  running the offense and the infielders while assisting in recruiting.

Men’s basketball – Georgia released Dennis Felton as head coach. In six seasons with the Bulldogs, Felton compiled an 84-91 record and guided the squad to the Southeastern Conference tournament title last season. Assistant coach Pete Herrmann was chosen as interim head coach the rest of the season.

FootballBobby Bowden signed a one-year contract to return for his 34th season as head coach at Florida State. Bowden, who is credited with national championships in 1993 and 1999, is second on college football’s all-time career wins list at 382, just one shy of record-holder Joe Paterno of Penn State … Steven Aycock was elevated to head coach at Johnson C. Smith after serving in an interim capacity since November of last year. Entering his fifth year with the Golden Bulls, he previously was an assistant at Tennessee State and Savannah State.

Football assistants – North Dakota State tabbed Scott Fuchs as offensive line coach to succeed Pat Perles, who accepted duties as offensive line coach at Ball State. Fuchs, a former All-American offensive guard at North Dakota State, served as offensive line coach at Southern Illinois this past season, helping the Salukis tie for the Missouri Valley Football Conference title and advance to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs … Greg Roman was hired as offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Stanford. Roman has been assistant offensive line coach of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens since the 2006-07 season. He also spent four seasons with the Houston Texans and was a defensive and offensive assistant coach with the Carolina Panthers from 1995-2001 … Emporia State named Matt Walter as football strength and conditioning coach/wide receivers coach.  Walter had been the strength and conditioning coach at New Mexico State since 2005. Emporia State also promoted Gary Manuel and Sean Clowers to co-offensive coordinators. Manual is also the running backs coach while Clowers coaches the offensive line … Steve Marshall, a former assistant coach with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, was named as offensive line coach at California. In addition to six seasons coaching in the NFL, he also completed stints at Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Colorado and Alabama. He replaces Jim Michalczik … Purdue added Nick Cavallo as a graduate assistant for the defense. Cavallo, a backup defensive end and member of the special teams unit at Purdue from 2002 to 2006, has been working in player development for the football program at Rutgers since July of last year.

Softball assistantsDennis Buffington and Tara Emery were added as assistants at Susquehanna.

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – San Diego State appointed Larry Wade as an assistant coach. A former five-time NCAA all-American at Texas A&M, Wade will oversee sprinters and hurdlers.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – North Carolina A&T released head coach Lyndsay Schmiedel, who spent two seasons as head coach before being elevated to the top post in 2007 … Western Carolina hired Manuel “Manolo” Concepcion as the school’s eighth head volleyball coach. Concepcion was an assistant at Evansville last year.

Equipment manager – Elon hired Jeff Beggs as head athletics equipment manager, replacing Scott Jean, who accepted a similar position at Connecticut.

ConferencesBernadette Bartlett, a former student-athlete at Mississippi, was appointed as the Big East Conference Minority Administrative Fellow. Bartlett will spend the next 18 months with the league and will be involved in most aspects of conference administration including sports programs, championship administration, budget, compliance and eligibility and communications. The 2008 graduate of Mississippi competed on the soccer team for one season and earned a bachelor’s degree in management.

DeathsGeorge H. Christman Jr., a former head athletic trainer/massage therapist at Kenyon for 36 years, died January 25. He also was an instructor of physical education at the school.
