Muskingum hired Matt Louis as the football program’s linebacker coach. Louis, a former Muskingum defensive standout, arrives from Rose-Hulman, where he was outside linebackers coach in 2008. Previously, Louis spent two seasons as assistant coach at Cincinnati, as an assistant to the head coach and football operations assistant. He also coordinated the Bearcats community service projects and assisted the defensive backs coach with practice and game preparations. Before that, Louis worked as a football operations assistant for the Cincinnati Bengals and was a graduate assistant football coach for defensive backs at the University of Buffalo.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Longtime Hope coach and current AD Ray Smith has announced he will retire at the end of the school year. The winningest football coach in the history of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Smith, 70, has spent four decades teaching and coaching and is presently is professor of kinesiology and director of athletics for men. Smith came to Hope in 1970 and was football coach for 25 seasons (1970-94). He has also coached wrestling, golf and baseball. He has been the men’s AD since 1980.

Coaches

Men’s basketball assistants – Loyola Marymount promoted Myke Scholl to associate head coach.

Football – Air Force signed head coach Troy Calhoun to a five-year contract through 2013.

Football assistants – Florida named Brian White as tight ends coach … Minnesota named Jedd Fisch as offensive coordinator … Ball State appointed Doug Graber as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Deion Melvin as linebackers coach and Pat Perles as offensive line coach … Connecticut named Joe Moorhead as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach … Keith Gilmore was hired as defensive line coach at Illinois … Michigan hired former Syracuse head coach Greg Robinson as defensive coordinator … Bill Young was appointed as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State … Toledo named Scott Satterfield as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, and Steven Clinkscale as cornerbacks coach … Washington hired Aaron Roderick as wide receivers coach … Former Cincinnati defensive line coach Keith Gilmore was hired to the same position at Illinois.

Men’s and women’s soccerBrent Jacquette was named head men’s soccer coach at Widener after serving as an assistant there for two seasons … Gary Parsons announced his retirement after 28 seasons of service as the Oakland men’s soccer coach. Parsons, the 15th Division I coach to eclipse 350 career wins, led the Golden Grizzlies to 27 winning seasons and 17 NCAA tournaments (13 in Division II and four in Division I).

Deaths

Former Oklahoma City basketball player Gary Hill died January 17 at the age of 67. Hill was one of the school’s eight NCAA all-Americans in 1963. Along with his coach Abe Lemons, Hill was part of the inaugural class of the Oklahoma City athletic hall of fame in 1979. Hill played for Oklahoma City from 1959-63.
