Texas A&M-Commerce hired former Baylor and Kentucky head coach Guy Morriss as the school’s new head football coach. Moriss coached at Baylor from 2003-07 and at Kentucky from 2001-02. The TCU graduate played for the Philadelphia Eagles (1973-83) and the New England Patriots (1984-87). He was an offensive line coach at New England for two years and coached the line at Valdosta State for two more before returning to the professional ranks. He spent the 1996 season as the offensive line coach at Mississippi State before moving on to Kentucky, where he spent four seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach before being promoted to head coach.

Athletics directors – Georgia State named Bill Curry as interim AD.

Coaches

Baseball – Stetson extended baseball coach Pete Dunn’s contract through the 2013 season. Dunn is in his 30th year at the helm.

Men’s and women’s cross country – IUPUI named Chuck Koeppen as men’s cross country coach.

Football – Boston College football coach Jeff Jagodzinski was released after winning 20 games in two seasons and with three years left on his contract … Navy extended head football coach Ken Niumatalolo’s contract, though terms were not disclosed. He was 8-5 in his first year as the Midshipmen’s head coach in 2008.

Men’s and women’s soccer – North Carolina State hired former Greensboro Dynamo player Steve Springthorpe as head women’s soccer coach. Springthorpe spent the previous five seasons at Fresno State, where he compiled a 52-40-12 record and took the Bulldogs to NCAA postseason appearances in 2005 and 2008.

Deaths

Caleb Sanders, 20, a cornerback with the Pittsburg State football team, died January 5 in Overland Park, Kansas. Sanders, a redshirt freshman, played in 12 games, tallied 45 tackles, and had two interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown) and four pass breakups.
