Charlie Weis was dismissed after five seasons as head football coach at Notre Dame. Weis compiled a 35-27 record during his tenure and led the Irish to bowl-game appearances in 2005, 2006 and 2008. He came to Notre Dame after serving as offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. The school announced that Rob Ianello, who has served as assistant head coach/offense, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, will assume responsibility for football operations until a new coach is hired.

Other transactions

Football – Louisiana-Monroe will not renew the contract of head coach Charlie Weatherbie, who departs after seven seasons with a 31-51 record. Weatherbie also has coached at Utah State and Navy … Dave Optar resigned after eight seasons at St. Francis. He took over a team in 2002 that had lost 23 straight games and closed out his tenure with a 17-68 record.

Football assistants – Syracuse will not retain offensive coordinator Rob Spence, wide receivers coach Jamie Elizondo and defensive line coach Derrick Jackson.
