Gallaudet appointed T. Alan Hurwitz as president. Hurwitz spent 39 years at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, where he rose from instructor to president of one of eight colleges within the Rochester Institute of Technology. Hurwitz replaces Robert Davila, who was appointed interim president after Provost Jane K. Fernandes’ appointment as successor to I. King Jordan was rescinded.

Other transactions

Directors of athleticsDavid Sayler has been named interim director of athletics at Rice. He succeeds Chris Del Conte, who took the same post at TCU. Sayler came to Rice in August 2006 after spending two seasons as associate athletics director for business operations at Oregon State … Michigan’s Bill Martin announced he will retire on September 4, 2010. Martin has been the Wolverines’ AD since August 2000. During Martin’s tenure, Michigan claimed two national championships, with field hockey in 2001 earning the school’s first national title in a women’s team sport and softball winning the 2005 NCAA Women’s College World Series.

Deaths

Linda K. Vaughan, Wellesley professor emerita and former chair/director of athletics, lost her battle with cancer on October 17. Vaughan was a member of the Wellesley faculty and staff in various capacities for 34 years until her retirement in 2000.
