Former Massachusetts soccer standout and current assistant coach Angela Napoli was named as head women’s soccer coach at the school for the 2009 season. The 2000 UMass graduate, who has spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the program, takes over for longtime head coach Jim Rudy, who retired in May after 21 seasons. Napoli also formerly has been an assistant coach at Albany and William and Mary.

Other transactions

Associate athletics directorDan Satter was chosen as associate athletics director for marketing and communications at Boston U. Satter, who previously was an assistant athletic director, has been with the Terrier program for about two years

Baseball assistant – Cleveland State tabbed Shane Davis as an assistant baseball coach.

Men’s basketball – Carroll selected David Buchanan as the 25th head men’s basketball coach in the 101-year history of the program. Buchanan, head men’s basketball coach at Wisconsin-Superior for the past two years, succeeds David Schultz, who resigned after seven seasons.

Men’s basketball assistant – Rose-Hulman added Rusty Loyd as head men’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach. Loyd has spent the past three seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Illinois Institute of Technology and formerly was a men’s basketball assistant at Chicago and also at Lewis.

Women’s basketball assistantTony McAndrews was selected as an assistant at Cleveland State.

Men’s and women’s cross countryJosh Merck was hired as head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Marymount.

Football – Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz signed a contract extension to remain head coach through 2015. This fall, Ferentz will enter his 20th season with the football program and his 11th as head coach of the Hawkeyes.  

Football assistants – Albany tabbed Akeem Cedeno as outside linebackers coach. For the past two seasons, Cedeno has been an assistant at Amherst, where he coached outside linebackers and served as assistant director of football operations … Youngstown named Mike Kolakowski as safeties coach and assistant defensive coach. Kolakowski, who has been safeties/special teams coordinator at Central Michigan for two seasons, formerly was defensive coordinator at Youngstown from 2004-06.

Men’s and women’s golfCara Noel was hired as head women’s golf coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at Rose-Hulman after spending the past two seasons at Bluffton.

Staff

ComplianceJoe Nicastro was elevated to director of compliance at Boston U. after six years as a compliance coordinator.  

Conferences

The Mid-American Conference hired Jackie Mynarski as associate commissioner for institutional services and Ken Mather as assistant commissioner/media and public relations. Mynarski spent the previous two years at the Missouri Valley, while Mather has been with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns for 10 seasons as a manager for publicity and media relations and as director for media relations. The also conference announced a reorganization of staff that included promoting Bob Gennarelli to senior associate commissioner and chief operating officer and elevating Jeff Bacon from director of compliance to assistant commissioner for championships and sport programs. In addition, Jeremy Guy was named director of communications and Erin Dugan was appointed as associate director for media relations and external affairs.
