Jared Holowaty, an assistant coach at Maine for the past four years, was hired as the head baseball coach at Whitman. Holowaty, who helped Eastern Connecticut State earn the 2002 NCAA Division III national championship as a senior captain, takes over for Casey Powell, who resigned to accept a coaching position at Seattle. In addition to his stint at Maine, he spent one year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at College of New Jersey (2003-04) and one year at Eastern Connecticut State (2002-03).

Other transactions

Assistant athletics director – Former Wisconsin assistant athletics director for communications Justin Doherty was named as assistant athletics director for external relations for the Badgers. He will oversee athletics communications, marketing, the ticket office, video services and Web site services and will become the department’s liaison to Badger Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network.

Associate athletics directors – Wisconsin’s Shawn Eichorst, executive associate athletics director, will add oversight of the men's basketball program, licensing and trademarks and the Bucky’s Locker Room merchandising relationship, while Steve Waterfield, formerly assistant athletics director for student services, will become an associate director and add oversight of the student-athlete discipline policy, department head meetings and open-records requests. Additionally, John Chadima, who was named associate athletics director for capital projects and sports administration, assumed additional responsibilities overseeing the Adidas relationship, and Sean Frazier became senior associate athletics director for operations.

Women’s basketballAndy Landers, the first and only full-time head women’s basketball coach at Georgia, signed a three-year contract extension through 2013-14. Landers, a four-time national coach of the year, is one of only five major college women's basketball coaches to top 800 wins.

Women’s basketball assistants – Southern New Hampshire selected Kara Williamson as an assistant coach, succeeding Mike Roux, who became an assistant women’s basketball coach at Holy Cross. Williamson has been an assistant coach at American International for the past two seasons … Candice Gist was added as director of women’s basketball operations at Evansville, effective August 1. Formerly an assistant coach at Wabash Valley Community College, Gist replaces Nicki Motto, who was promoted to a full-time assistant coach on the staff.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics assistant Julie Ballard Clark, a former standout gymnast at Georgia, was named as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. The two-time all-American was a member of the 1998 national championship team and has been a volunteer assistant since 2001 and served as director of gymnastics operations for the program in 2008. 

FootballNiles Nelson was elevated to head coach at Husson. Nelson, who replaces Gabby Price, has been the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for the past five seasons.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Nichols appointed Brett Hewitt as the 12th head men’s lacrosse coach. Hewitt becomes the 12th head coach in program history after serving as an assistant coach at Bentley for the past five seasons.

Softball – IPFW selected Amy Tudor as head softball coach, effective August 1. Most recently, Tudor has been in charge of the program at Belmont and formerly was head coach at Ohio Wesleyan.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Western Illinois chose Greg Naumann, a former Leatherneck swimmer and student assistant coach, as head men’s and women’s coach. Most recently, he has been an assistant coach at Truman State.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – Mount Olive hired Hans Hillestad as assistant men’s and women’s volleyball coach. Hillestad has been head volleyball coach at Aviano High School in Aviano, Italy, since 1995, and also spent four years as head coach of the men’s and women’s volleyball teams at a U.S. Air Force base in Aviano.

Conferences

Esther Barazzone, president of Chatham, was chosen as chair of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Presidents’ Council for the 2009-10 academic year. In addition, Chatham athletics director Amy Buxbaum will serve as chair of the PAC Athletic Directors Council in 2009-10, while the PAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Association (PAC FARA) will be chaired by Chatham FAR Tracey Johnson … The Northwest Conference announced Bill Robinson, president of Whitworth, as chair. He will be joined on the Presidents Council Executive Committee by former chair George Bridges, president at Whitman, and chair-elect M. Lee Pelton, president at Willamette.
