Chancellors and presidents – Chaminade named Bernard J. Ploeger as its new president. He previously served as executive vice president and provost at Chaminade … Craven Williams retired after 16 years as president of Greensboro.

Coaches

Men’s basketball assistantsEric Gabriel and Akeem Miskdeen have been added as assistant men’s basketball coaches at Mount Olive. Gabriel had been an assistant at Methodist, while Miskdeen was a volunteer director of basketball operations at Hampton.

Women’s basketball – Jacksonville signed women’s basketball coach Jill Dunn to a contract extension through the 2012-13 season.

Men’s and women’s golf – Rose Hulman named Rusty Loyd as head men’s golf and assistant men’s basketball coach. The school also named Cara Noel as head women’s golf and assistant women’s basketball coach.

Staff

Media relations – Former Houston Chronicle beat writer MoiseKapenda Bower joined the Rice athletics department as a writer for the school’s athletics Web site (riceowls.com).

Deaths

Michael Colley, a longtime assistant director in the Virginia athletics media relations office, died July 11 while vacationing with friends in Virginia Beach. He was 46 … Former St. Cloud State University baseball coach James F. Stanek, age 83, died July 11 at his home in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Stanek served as the baseball coach at St. Cloud State from 1968-78. He also served as an assistant football coach at St. Cloud State and was a professor in the physical education department from 1967-91.

Miscellaneous

The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund announced board appointments for 2009. Stephanie Glance, former North Carolina State interim head women’s basketball coach and vice president of the fund, will be the board’s president, replacing Marsha Sharp, who became the fund’s executive director.  Also joining the executive committee as secretary is Jill Pizzotti, Nike manager of women’s college basketball. She takes over for Connie Rogers-Newcome, Adhesives Research, Inc. executive account manager, who has accepted the vice president position. Rounding out the board is Susan Yow, Belmont Abbey head coach, replacing Bill Cowher, CBS Sports football anchor, who recently completed his term … The National Junior College Athletic Association named Mary Ellen Leicht as its executive director. Leicht becomes just the third executive director for the NJCAA dating back to 1939, and is the first female to be named to the position.
