Trinity (Texas) announced it will restructure coaching and staff positions for men’s and women’s tennis August 1, appointing Butch Newman as the new director of tennis and Russell McMindes as head coach of men’s tennis. Ryan Takao will continue as head coach of the women’s tennis team. Newman has coached the men’s team since 1986 and the women’s squad from 1991 to 2008. The three-time national coach of the year won both the Division III men’s and women’s championships in 2000. McMindes, an assistant men’s coach for seven seasons, was a member of the 2000 championship team. Takao, who took over the women’s team in the fall of 2008, has completed 13 years as a coach with the Tigers’ tennis program. He served as the women’s tennis assistant under Newman.

Other transactions

Chancellors and presidents – Bernadette Gray-Little, executive vice chancellor and provost at North Carolina, has been named chancellor at Kansas.

Coaches

Women’s basketball assistants – Loras added Elmhurst graduate Jennifer Randall as an assistant women’s basketball coach.

Football assistants – Former NFL player Todd Perry has been added to the Georgia State football coaching staff as tackles and tight ends coach. Perry played at Kentucky before an 11-year career as an NFL offensive lineman with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. Georgia State also selected Dave Kaplan, formerly executive director and tournament director for the Atlanta Classic Foundation, Inc., as director of football operations.

Conferences

The Big East Conference named Pamela Flenke and Michael Gambardella as communications assistants.

Deaths

Stephen Jones, former head men’s soccer coach at Carson-Newman and a standout goalkeeper at Coker, died June 29 at the age of 44 after a bout with cancer. Jones was in goal for Coker from 1984-87 under then-head coach and Tim Griggs, who is now the Coker AD. He also spent two years as a graduate assistant while earning his master’s degree at The Citadel and served briefly as interim head coach there.
