Bowie State named alumnus Darrell Brooks its men’s basketball coach. The 1979 graduate coached at George Washington for the last eight seasons. He also was an assistant at George Mason, American, William and Mary, Central State, and Bowie State.

Other transactions

Athletic directors − Akron named Hunter Yurachek to the position on an interim basis. Yurachek replaces Mack Rhoades, who resigned to accept a similar position at Houston. Yuracheck is in his fourth year at Akron, most recently serving as executive senior associate athletics director … Old Dominion’s Jim Jarrett announced he will retire in June 2010. Jarrett has been with the school since 1967, serving first as a professor and then moving to the athletics director’s chair in 1970.

Coaches

Baseball − Nyak hired Matthew Cornacchione, who will also be the school’s sports information director. Cornacchione had been serving as SID and assistant baseball coach at Bloomfield.

Men’s basketball − Newberry tabbed Steve DeMeo, a former associate head coach at Providence and assistant coach at Central Florida.

Women’s basketball − Former Northland coach Dan Roiger accepted the position at St. Lawrence. Roiger replaces Jennifer Kroll, who resigned to take a job at Wellesley … Texas A&M International selected David Beaver, former assistant coach at Sam Houston State.

Football − Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Wildcats through 2015. He has been head coach since 2006.

Men’s and women’s golf − Oklahoma selected former Georgia standout Ryan Hybl for its men’s program. Hybl was an assistant with the Bulldogs for the past four seasons. He played golf professionally during that time and retired earlier this year due to injury.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse − High Point hired Lyndsey Boswell for its women’s program. Boswell was the head coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian.

Men’s and women’s soccer − Mount St. Vincent tabbed James Quiroga to run its men’s program. Quiroga has coached at Iona and the club team FC Westchester … Colorado State-Pueblo hired Janet Cassidy for its women’s program. Cassidy coached at Oxnard in 2008 and was an assistant at Cal Poly-Pomona for four seasons.

Softball − Nichols selected Kristan Mallet. Mallet will retain her responsibilities as head field hockey coach.

Men’s and women’s tennis: Fordham hired alumnus Bette-Ann Speliotis Liguori.  She was most recently the varsity coach at Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York.

Conferences

The ECAC announced the appointment of Larry Last and Steve Rossetti, coordinators of men’s basketball officials in New England; Jim Huetter, coordinator of women’s basketball officials in upstate New York and Lou Minutoli, coordinator of soccer officials in metro New York … Wendy Guthrie resigned as commissioner of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. She will remain senior associate commissioner at the West Coast Conference.

Deaths

Former Vermont soccer coach Hal Greig died June 17 after a long illness. He was 79. Grieg joined Vermont in 1962 as a physical education instructor and founded the school’s first varsity soccer team in 1964. The team named an award after Greig to honor the student-athlete who has done the most for the program. The annual alumni game is also named for Greig. He also coached tennis at Vermont for 17 seasons … Irvin H. “Irv” Carty Jr., the first black student-athlete to earn a varsity letter at Delaware, died June 12. He was 77.  Carty earned the first of two letters in cross country in 1951. He later joined the U.S. Army and worked for the state of Delaware and the U.S. Postal Service.
