Elon extended baseball coach Mike Kennedy’s contract through 2014. Kennedy, coming off two consecutive seasons with 40 or more wins, has coached the Phoenix for 13 years. In that time, he has won 436 games in 12 winning seasons. Kennedy took the Phoenix to the NCAA tournament in 2002, 2006,2008 and 2009.

Administrators

Athletics director – Houston hired Akron’s Mack Rhoades to replace Dave Maggard, who retired last month. Rhoades will begin his new duties this fall.

 Coaches

Women’s basketball – Coast Guard promoted Rick Gaines, an assistant with the program for the past 10 seasons. Gaines also teaches chemistry at the academy … Connecticut College hired Holy Cross assistant Brian Wilson. Before joining the Holy Cross staff, he was an intern at Williams.

Women’s basketball assistantJennifer Leedham accepted a position at Franklin Pierce. Leedham was named the Northeast-10 defensive player of the year in 2009. She was a four-year starter and two-year captain of the women’s basketball team at Franklin Pierce.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics – Nebraska promoted longtime assistant Chuck Chmelka to replace the retiring Francis Allen. Chmelka competed at Nebraska from 1978 to 1981 and joined the staff in 1986.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Connecticut College hired Brown assistant Kenny Murphy for its men’s program.  Murphy played professional soccer and spent 16 years as a commodities broker before joining the staff at Brown in 2003.

Softball Danielle Delude resigned after six seasons at Stonehill.

Deaths – Former Rensselaer goaltender Nathan Marsters died June 8. Marsters, 29, posted the school’s career record for games played, starts, saves and goals against average … Former Kansas athletics director Bob Frederick died June 12 after suffering injuries in a bicycling accident. Frederick was athletics director during Kansas’ win in the 1988 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and two bowl games. He served on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for six years, the final two as chairman. He remained a faculty member at Kansas, teaching sports marketing and law.
