Former Northern Michigan athletics director Gildo Canale died. Canale served Northern Michigan in a variety of roles from 1959-92, including athletic trainer, intramurals director, golf coach and assistant athletics director. After he accepted the athletics director position in 1971, Canale created men’s ice hockey as a varsity sport and enjoyed success in football, men’s basketball, gymnastics, swimming and wrestling. He served on several NCAA committees and was an official in football, basketball and track.

Coaches

Men’s basketball – Fairleigh Dickinson released Tom Green after 26 years. The school will hire an interim coach for 2009-10 … Bret Campbell resigned from Tennessee-Martin. He will be replaced by assistant coach Jason James, who has been with the Skyhawks for the past seven years. … Cal State Stanislaus hired Larry Reynolds, who has coaching experience at UC Riverside, San Francisco and Long Beach State.

Men’s basketball assistants – Sacramento State tabbed Ajay Riding, former Fresno State student-athlete and graduate assistant.

Men’s and women’s soccerDana Taylor will coach Cal State Stanislaus. He led Oregon State for the last 10 seasons.
