Jeff Frank, retired men’s tennis coach at Davidson and a member of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Committee during the 1980s, died May 30 after an extended illness. He was 64. Frank’s Davidson teams posted winning seasons in 29 of his 33 seasons, during which he compiled a 541-319-1 record. He also played at the school. Frank chaired the NCAA tennis committee’s men’s subcommittee during the late 1980s.

Transactions

Directors of athleticsTim Schoonveld was selected as co-athletics director at Hope, his alma mater. He succeeds retiring men’s Athletics Director Ray Smith and will share oversight of the athletics program with Eva Dean Folkert, although directors’ responsibilities at the school no longer will be gender-specific. Schoonveld, who also joins Hope’s kinesiology faculty, previously was assistant principal and athletics director at Holland (Michigan) Christian High School.

Assistant director of athleticsElisa Paulson was named assistant AD of academic affairs for student-athletes/compliance coordinator at Loyola (Maryland). She previously was compliance coordinator and athletics academic advisor at Utah Valley.

Coaches

Baseball Tom Sowinski was introduced as head coach at Queens (New York). He is a former assistant at Adelphi and Manhattan, and was a pitcher on St. John’s teams that advanced to the Division I College World Series during the 1960s … Matt Heath resigned as assistant coach at Auburn.

Women’s basketballCandice Brown was appointed head coach at Vassar. The former Marymount (Virginia) player previously was head coach for three years at Manhattanville and also has assisted at Southern New Hampshire and at her alma mater.

Women’s basketball assistantAmy Waugh was named assistant coach at Xavier.

Football assistantsDemarco McNeil, Tim Sanders and Burt Stuart joined the staff at Birmingham-Southern.

LacrosseKate Mullen named head women’s coach at Southern New Hampshire. She coached teams at Endicott to three consecutive appearances in the Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship beginning in 2006.

Soccer Travis Clarke was hired as head women’s coach at Cal State San Bernardino after launching and coaching the program at Hawaii-Hilo for the past two seasons … Giovanni Vlahos was named head men’s coach at Greensboro after serving last season as men’s and women’s coach at the junior college level at South Carolina-Sumter … Tracy Grouse joined the women’s staff at Iowa State as an assistant.

Swimming and divingJohn Pringle was promoted to men’s and women’s head coach at Bridgewater State, where he became the school’s first full-time aquatics director a year ago and assisted with the teams last season.

TennisDante Dipulli was appointed assistant men’s and women’s coach at UMKC.
