Virnette House-Browning was appointed as the interim director of athletics at Bradley, replacing Ken Kavanagh, who was chosen as athletics director at Florida Gulf Coast. Most recently, she has served as executive athletics director and senior woman administrator at the university. In addition to recently concluding a four-year term on the NCAA Academic, Eligibility and Compliance Cabinet, she currently is a member of the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interest Committee.

Other transactions

Chancellors and presidents Steven A. Scott, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Pittsburg State, was elevated to president at the school … Chicago State appointed Wayne Watson as president. Watson is retiring as chancellor at City Colleges of Chicago, a position he has held since 1998.

Directors of athletics – Tennessee athletics administrator John Currie was chosen as athletics director at Kansas State. Currie, a 10-year veteran of the Vols athletics department, was the executive associate athletics director, responsible for the department’s fundraising, marketing, ticketing, media relations, public relations, Internet and broadcasting efforts and provided oversight for the men’s basketball program and other department initiatives … James Roderick (Rod) Wyatt, associate director of athletics for student welfare at Greensboro, was tapped as interim athletics director, replacing Nelson E. Bobb, who resigned, effective June 30.

Women’s basketball – Western Carolina chose Karen Middleton as the 10th head coach in the women’s basketball program’s history. Middleton has been an assistant coach at Illinois for the past two seasons and spent the previous 10 years as an assistant at Stanford, helping the Cardinal collect eight Pac-10 conference titles and earn 10 consecutive NCAA tournament berths … Larry Park has been hired as the head women’s basketball coach at Rockhurst. He has been an assistant men’s coach at the university since 1996.

Women’s soccerBrittany Oliveira was tabbed as head coach at Alverno. Oliveira has spent the past year as a volunteer assistant coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and formerly was an assistant at UNLV and Northwestern.

Women’s basketball assistant – Oregon selected Janell Bergstrom as director of operations. She most recently served as a special assistant to the executive senior athletics administration, working on special projects within the athletics department.

Baseball – Concordia (Texas) announced Tommy Boggs as head coach, replacing Mike Gardner, who stands as the all-time wins leader at the school and transitioned to a faculty position at the university. Since retiring from professional baseball due to an arm injury in 1986, Boggs started the Austin Slam Baseball program, which was designed to highlight and develop local high school talent.
