Wayman Tisdale, Oklahoma’s all-time career basketball scoring and rebounding leader, died May 15 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 44. The three-time all-American registered 2,661 points and 1,048 rebounds in three seasons with the Sooners and earned Big Eight Conference Player of the Year honors in each of those years. In addition to 12 NBA seasons, Tisdale also was a member of the U.S. team that captured a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. After basketball, Tisdale went on to become an award-winning jazz musician credited with multiple top 10 albums.

Directors of athleticsMichael Spinner was named director of athletics at Notre Dame (Maryland), effective June 1. Most recently, Spinner has been an associate athletics director at Yeshiva, where he also served as sports information director and coordinated marketing, promotional, public relations and media relations for the athletics department.

Women’s basketball – Winthrop assistant coach Jodi Davis resigned after three seasons and will become head girls’ varsity coach at Jonesboro (Arkansas) High School.

SoftballGerry Szabo assumed additional responsibilities as head softball coach at Wesley. Szabo, who replaces Tracey Short, will continue to serve as head women’s volleyball coach. Short also will retain her duties as Wesley's head field hockey coach and senior woman administrator … Alverno head coach Heather Burtman resigned after seven seasons. She also was an assistant basketball coach, sports information director and compliance coordinator at the school.

ConferencesRich Falk, Big Ten coordinator of men’s basketball officiating, announced plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season. He joined the league as an assistant commissioner in 1989 after an eight-year stint as the head men’s basketball coach at Northwestern.
