Presidents and chancellorsPhillip Paul Kerstetter was named as the fourth president at Mount Olive. Kerstetter previously was president and chief executive officer at Kansas Wesleyan. He succeeds J. William Byrd, who retired after 14 years as president and will continue as chancellor at Mount Olive.

Director of athletics – Henderson State Athletics Director Sam Goodwin announced plans to retire, effective March 1, 2010. Goodwin has been in charge of his alma mater’s athletics department since 2000 and formerly spent 17 years as head football coach at Northwestern State, where he won four Southland Conference titles.

Men’s basketball assistants – Akron promoted Rick McFadden to assistant coach and named Dan Peters as director of basketball operations. McFadden, who has most recently served as director of basketball operations for the last four seasons, replaces Jeff Boals. Peters has been an assistant at Ohio State for the last five years … Donald “Lou” Chapman was tabbed as coordinator of men’s basketball operations at Loyola (Illinois). Chapman most recently was an assistant coach at the Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Football assistant – Wartburg hired Scott Power as defensive line coach. Power, who was defensive coordinator at Benton Central (Indiana) High School in 2007 and 2008, replaces Marcus West, who accepted a post at Chattanooga at the end of the 2008 season.

Women’s golfSue Ewart stepped down as head women’s coach at Long Beach State after 13 seasons. Ewart will continue to work with the golf program in a part-time capacity.

Men’s ice hockey – Bowling Green elevated Dennis Williams to interim head coach after Scott Paluch resigned after seven seasons to accept an opportunity with USA Hockey. Williams, who completed his first season as an assistant coach with the program last year, formerly was the head coach at Neumann College for three seasons (2003-04 to 2005-06).

Men’s and women’s lacrosseJeff Cohen was chosen as head men’s coach at Clark (Massachusetts), effective August 1, after serving as an assistant coach at Colgate, where he helped guide the squad to its first NCAA tournament berth in 2008. Cohen replaces Evan Davis who resigned in May after seven seasons … Saint Joseph’s (Maine) announced Anna Gordon as head women’s coach. Gorden has served as co-head coach of the program for the past two seasons. Co-head coach Rupert Lewis will remain on staff and retain his responsibilities as head field hockey coach while assuming additional duties as intramurals coordinator.

Rowing – William Smith named Jodi Hope as an assistant coach. Hope was a graduate assistant and an assistant coach at Connecticut and most recently served as an assistant coach at Glastonbury (Connecticut) High School during the 2009 spring season. Meanwhile, Dan Gilbert was appointed as an assistant coach at Hobart and will be the rigger for both Hobart and William Smith. This past spring, Gilbert was a volunteer assistant to the freshmen coach at Georgetown.

Men’s soccerSteve Simmons was chosen as head coach at Oregon State. For the past six years, Simmons has been head coach at Northern Illinois, compiling a 59-47-13 record and leading the Huskies to a Mid-American Conference Championship and a 2006 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship appearance.

Men’s soccer assistantJosh Sanderson was added as an assistant at Wartburg, succeeding Kirk Artist, who was chosen as head men’s and women’s coach at Indian Hills Community College. Sanderson formerly was a graduate assistant at Bemidji State from 2007-09 and was a volunteer assistant at North Dakota State in 2006-07.

Women’s soccerJim Murphy and Carla Flaherty were appointed as co-head coaches at Bates. Murphy has led the Bates women’s soccer and basketball programs since 1994 and Flaherty has been an assistant basketball coach since 2004, served as assistant women’s soccer coach since 2005 and spent the 2008 season as interim head coach of the program.

Men’s tennisKyle Spencer was selected as head coach at Maryland. Spencer, the 2009 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year, has been Baylor’s assistant director of tennis for the last three seasons.

Women’s volleyball – Greensboro head coach Shawn Garus resigned to accept the same position at Boise State. In four seasons at Greensboro, Garus compiled a mark of 71-64, including registering a 66-38 record in his final three seasons. He led the Spartans to three straight 20-win seasons for the first time since 1991-95.

Conferences – The Big Ten Conference announced the following as new officers of the Council of Presidents/Chancellors for the 2009-10 academic year: Lou Anna K. Simon, president at Michigan State, chair; Michael McRobbie, president at Indiana, first vice chair; and France A. Cordova, president at Purdue, second vice chair. Simon, McRobbie and Cordova also will serve as the Executive/Compensation Committee for the conference.
