Portland State hired Nigel Burton as football coach. Burton coordinated Nevada’s defense for the past two seasons. Before his time with the Wolfpack, he spent five seasons with Oregon State. He also spent part of 2002 in the NFL as a coaching intern with the Denver Broncos. He played at Pacific until the school dropped its football program, when he transferred to Washington. He appeared in three consecutive bowl games for the Huskies.

Other transactions

Presidents and chancellorsRita Hartung Cheng accepted the chancellor’s job at Southern Illinois. She had been provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Milwaukee … Delaware State promoted Harry Lee Williams to the presidency. He had served as provost and vice president of academic affairs.

Coaches

Football – Cornell hired former Dubuque head coach Vince Brautigam to replace Matt Dillon, who resigned November 16.

Men’s and women’s golf – Rosemont tabbed Robert Thomas for its men’s program, which will begin competition in fall 2010. He has coached at the prep level since 2005 and served as a basketball assistant at Delaware and Widener.

Men’s and women’s volleyballCrystal McClure resigned from Alverno’s women’s program after two seasons … Stephanie Schleuder retired from the women’s program at Macalester, where she spent the last 12 years of a 34-year collegiate head coaching  career that included stops at Bemidji State, Alabama and Minnesota. She will remain in the Macalester athletics department part time.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Xavier hired Woody Sherwood for its women’s program. Sherwood spent the last three seasons at Indiana, the last as assistant head coach.

Miscellaneous

Florida’s Tim Tebow received the William V. Campbell Trophy for success in the classroom, on the football field and through community leadership … Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as college football’s best defensive player.
