Milwaukee named George Koonce athletics director. Koonce, a former Green Bay Packer, was senior associate athletics director at Marquette. After his NFL career, Koonce joined the athletics department at his alma mater, East Carolina, as special assistant to the athletics director. He replaces the retiring Bud Haidet.

Other transactions

Presidents and chancellors – Coker selected Robert L. Wyatt to be the school’s 16th president. He was dean of the school of business administration at Drury and succeeds the retiring B. James Dawson.

Coaches  

Men’s basketball – Stony Brook extended the contract of head men’s basketball coach Steve Pikiell through the 2013-14 season. A Connecticut graduate, Pikiell has been with the Seawolves since 2005 … Miami (Ohio) and Charlie Coles agreed to a three-year contract extension. Coles has been with the RedHawks for 13 seasons.

Football assistants – Kent State hired Craig Aukerman to coach linebackers and Richard McNutt to coach cornerbacks. Aukerman spent the past four years in a similar position at Miami (Ohio), while McNutt was most recently defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistant – Greg Patullo and Stewart Flaherty will join Felician’s men’s staff.

Conferences

The Eastern College Athletic Conference voted in Lesley, Gallaudet, Cobleskill State and Hampton as members for the 2009-10 academic year. The ECAC membership now totals 319 institutions.

Deaths

Chapman soccer student-athlete Bryce Turner died March 16, soon after collapsing during a pickup soccer game. Turner was 19 … Javonte Clanton, a basketball student-athlete at South Carolina Aiken, died March 17 after an automobile accident in West Virginia. He was 20.
