Tom Williams, an assistant coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2007 and a graduate of the NCAA’s football coaching academy, has been hired at Yale, becoming the first black head football coach at the Ivy League school and only the second black head football coach in Ivy League history. Norries Wilson was the first when Columbia hired him in December 2005. Williams, who is the sixth black head football coach in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, previously was an assistant at Hawaii, Washington, Stanford and San Jose State. Williams replaces Jack Siedlecki, who retired in November after 12 seasons to become an assistant athletics director at Yale.

Coaches

Women’s basketball – North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow announced she will not coach the rest of the season due to health concerns. Assistant coach Stephanie Glance will serve as interim head coach.

Lacrosse – Wesley hired Bill Gorrow as the new head coach of the Wolverine's men's lacrosse program. He coached previously at Franklin & Marshall (he was the second-winningest coach in that school’s history with 50 wins) and at Georgetown.

Soccer – Youngstown State named Will Lemke as the Penguins’ fifth head soccer coach. He previously was at NAIA Viterbo University, where he won more than 80 games and was the winningest coach in the school’s history.

Conferences

The Patriot League promoted Patrick Muffley to associate director for sports management and compliance. Muffley joined the Patriot League staff in August 2007 after a two-year stint at Brown, where he served as the athletics administration intern from 2005-07 and as the travel coordinator from 2006-07.

Deaths

Wisconsin-Stout defensive back Marty Platek died from a snowmobile accident near Oakland Wisconsin, January 2. The accident also killed another Wisconsin-Stout student, Caitlin Higgins. Platek was a junior defensive back for the Blue Devils who saw limited action this past season … Joseph T. Hoy, former Western Michigan University athletics director, died December 23 in Naples, Florida. He was 90. Hoy, a former professor emeritus and athletics director from 1967-78, was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics hall of fame in 1979. A member of Western Michigan’s staff for 27 years, he also was head of the department of physical education for men and coached football, basketball and baseball before assuming the athletics directorship.
