Three national champions, including a double honoree in indoor and outdoor field events and a multiple titlist in the hurdles, are the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s Division III women’s scholar-athletes of the year.

Caitlin Schetter of Wisconsin-La Crosse, who swept the 2009 Division III championships’ indoor and outdoor long jumps, was named scholar athlete of the year for both indoor and outdoor field events, while Frostburg State’s Sumer Rohrs was selected as the outdoor track honoree after sweeping the 100- and 400-meter hurdles.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Ayla Mitchell also was honored by the coaches as indoor track scholar athlete of the year after winning the indoor mile run.

Schetter, a communications major at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, successfully defended her 2008 indoor high jump title indoors and then added the outdoor crown in helping her team to top-three finishes at the indoor and outdoor championships. Rohrs, who has claimed a total of six indoor and outdoor titles in the hurdles during her collegiate career, is a psychology major at Frostburg State. Mitchell, an elementary education major, helped Wisconsin-Oshkosh finish third at the indoor meet.

The trio led a group of 274 student-athletes representing 91 Division III member institutions who were selected for the Division III All Academic Track and Field Team.

Calvin led all schools by placing 13 student-athletes on the team, followed by indoor and outdoor team champion Wartburg and Wisconsin-La Crosse with 12 each. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference placed 35 student-athletes on the team, followed by the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 31 and the New England Small College Athletic Conference and New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference with 19 each.

A student-athlete must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 and meet the Division III indoor or outdoor championships’ automatic or provisional qualifying standard in an event to qualify for the team.
