Rochester’s Terry Gurnett became only the third women’s soccer coach in any NCAA division, and the first in Division III, to win 400 games in the sport.

He reached the milestone Friday in the Yellowjackets’ 1-0, sudden-death overtime victory over Penn State Behrend.

Gurnett, who is in his 33rd season at the school, became coach of the team after concluding his playing career at Rochester and receiving a degree in economics in 1977.

The coach, who now has compiled a 400-127-60 record, has led two squads to Division III Women’s Soccer Championship titles as well as a national runner-up finish. He was honored as the Division III women’s soccer coach of the decade for the 1980s.

He also has coached the Yellowjackets to 10 University Athletic Association titles.

Gurnett trails only two Division I coaches on the list of NCAA women’s soccer coaches with the most victories. North Carolina’s Anson Dorrance, the only coach who has won more than 600 games, collected his 679th victory during the weekend. Dorrance is in his 31st season with the Tar Heels.

Connecticut’s Len Tsantiris collected his 467th victory during the weekend.

Another Division III coach, William Smith’s Aliceann Wilber, moved to within eight wins of the 400-victory mark this week.
