Two brothers who share one of the most storied names in Wisconsin basketball history and who separately coached Wisconsin-Stevens Point men’s teams to more than 350 victories will be honored Saturday when the school unveils Bennett Court.

Dick Bennett, who went on to coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay and then led Wisconsin to the Final Four in 2000 before retiring in 2006 from Washington State, and Jack Bennett, who coached the Pointers to two Division III championships, will be honored during a halftime ceremony.

The newly named court is part of a renovation of Quandt Fieldhouse, which also includes a remodeling of the gymnasium’s entrance to showcase memorabilia from the basketball program’s history.

“What a wonderful opportunity we have to capture the spirit of Pointer basketball and make such a powerful statement for coming generations of Pointers and Pointer fans,” said Chancellor Linda Bunnell.

The school will honor the Bennetts’ dedication to basketball, leadership and character in naming the court in their honor.

Dick Bennett coached at the school from 1976 to 1985, and led his 1983-84 team to an NAIA runner-up finish before departing with 173 wins.

Brother Jack took the reins in 1996 and compiled 200 wins during a nine-year tenure, including back-to-back Division III titles in 2004 and 2005.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point recently surpassed an initial $100,000 fund-raising goal for the project to renovate the fieldhouse.

“We want everyone who steps into Quandt Fieldhouse to sense the tradition of greatness that, year in and year out, is embodied in coaches like the Bennetts and, most importantly, in America’s finest student-athletes who create their future through their experiences at UW-Stevens Point,” Bunnell said.

Current Pointers coach Bob Semling said the school has hoped for many years to enhance the gym’s lobby entrance.

“Having a place to capture the history and tradition of Pointer men’s basketball will make a significant and long-lasting impact on our program,” he said. “We cherish the idea of having a place for our alumni, boosters and fans to celebrate our past achievements through the many photos, stories, trophies and memorabilia that will be on display.”

The fund-raising project started in fall 2008.

“All of us who love Pointer basketball have a chance to secure our future by holding on to the wonderful memories of the many great players and coaches who have lifted this program to national prominence,” Semling said.
