Oshkosh grabs first men’s track and field crown

Wisconsin-Oshkosh scored by land and by air to win its first Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships team title Saturday at Marietta.

William Kaul won the 10,000-meter run and Tony Baker captured the discus throw to lead the Titans to a six-point victory over defending champion McMurry. Kaul and Baker also scored in the 5,000-meter run and hammer throw, respectively, to contribute 29 of the team’s 46 points.

The Titans also picked up a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles by Ben Zill to finally claim the team trophy after four top-five finishes since 1990, including that year’s runner-up placement.

“We had a tremendous three-day championship,” Wisconsin-Oshkosh coach John Zupanc told the Oshkosh (Wisconsin) Republican after competition ended. “Everything came together for us.”

The Titans dueled throughout the meet with McMurry until Kaul clinched the trophy on the final day with his fourth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run.

Kaul also started the Titans off right by winning the 10,000-meter run and forging a tie in team scoring with McMurry at the end of the championships’ first day. He broke away from the lead pack with about two laps left to claim all-American honors for the fourth time in the event.

“Everything else started picking up, and I just went – I went hard,” he said after the race. “I had committed to it and there’s no looking back. I went, looked back, made sure I had everybody, and then I put my head and went after it again.”

Baker’s discus win left the Titans with a four-point lead over rival Wisconsin-Whitewater at the end of Day 2 – and a 10-point cushion over McMurry. But the Titans likely still were looking back at that point, knowing that McMurry senior Hanneus Ollison had qualified for finals in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.

Ollison responded by successfully defending his title in the 400-meter run, then immediately returned to the track and finished second at 200 meters.

“I can’t say enough about the fierce competitor Hann is for doubling up in the 400 and 200 and performing great in both of them,” said McMurry coach Barbara Crousen. “He ran a great 400 to win the national championship and then he really stepped up for us big time to finish second in the 200.  He had to fight towards the finish line to get that second-place finish and he did it for us.”

Those 18 points gave McMurry a short-lived three-point lead over the Titans, but Kaul’s five points in the 5,000 meters ended the duel.

Kaul was outstanding in the distance runs, but he shared the spotlight there with Hamilton’s Peter Kosgei, who won his third straight 3,000-meter steeplechase before beating Kaul and all other comers in the 5,000 meters – despite running the last six laps with just one shoe.

Kosgei, who also won the mile run at the Division III men’s indoor championships in March and last fall’s cross country crown, now has collected nine championships in indoor and outdoor track and cross country entering his senior year.

Last year’s 800-meter titlist, Emmanuel Bota of Whitworth, also was a repeat champion, successfully defending his 2008 crown.

There were no meet records at Marietta – unless you count twin brothers from Linfield finishing first and second in the decathlon. Josh Lovell outpointed Jeremy Lovell for the title.

“We’ve battled in every meet we’ve been at,” Josh Lovell said. “It’s back and forth between us. It’s awesome to have someone there to push me and for me to push him.”
