Oglethorpe won its first Division III Men’s Golf Championships team title with a four-stroke win over second-place La Verne on Saturday in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The Petrels erased a four-stroke deficit on the final day of the tournament to claim the school’s first NCAA title in any sport.

Oglethorpe overcame third-round leader Methodist and held off La Verne. The Petrels finished with a four-day, 12-over-par 1,164.

Not only did Oglethorpe win its first team title but sophomore Olafur Loftsson from Reyjakvic, Iceland, shot a final-round 69 to rally for medalist honors. Loftsson finished in a tie with La Verne’s Mitchell Fedorka and won the first playoff hole.

“This is a great day for Oglethorpe athletics,” said Oglethorpe coach Jim Owen. “I could not be more proud of our guys for bringing home the school’s first championship. They certainly earned it with their stellar play on the course.”

Methodist, a nine-time winner of this event, finished third, seven strokes off the pace. Texas-Tyler and Illinois Wesleyan rounded out the top five.

La Verne’s Rizal Amin finished two shots behind Loftsson and teammate Fedorka in the race for medalist honors. Methodist’s Matt Bova Methodist and Huntingdon’s Mack Duke tied for fourth. Fedorka fired a first-round 67 for the tournament’s low round.
