Rosemont’s teams have a new identity this year, and its new men’s soccer squad will become the first team to display the recently unveiled Ravens insignia when it opens its season Saturday.

The previously single-gender institution, which is adding three men’s sports this year to its six women’s sports, is replacing its former Rambling Rose logo and changing its teams’ name from the Ramblers to the Ravens.

The soccer team will play the school’s first varsity men’s game Saturday afternoon on the road at Valley Forge Christian. Its first home game is set for September 9 against Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Gwynedd-Mercy.

The Ravens name was selected after an online survey soliciting input from current students, alumni, faculty, staff and the administration. More than 60 percent of the respondents were alumni.

The school unveiled its new identity August 30.

“Today, we celebrate the rich history and tradition of the well-established spirit of Rosemont athletics,” Athletics Director Lynn Rothenhoefer said at the unveiling. “At the same time, we celebrate our athletic re-founding with this new visual identity that is contemporary and powerful.”

Later this fall, the college will retire its school mascot, Rosie the Rosemonster, which has been in use since 1988 and is separate from its athletics mascot. Another mascot will be created.

The school’s athletics teams have used the Ramblers name since 1983.

“With the start of a new era of educational and athletics opportunities for both men and women, the college’s administration felt the change was important to implementing its newly adopted strategic plan,” said Alexis M. Kropp, the school’s director of public relations.

The Pennsylvania school accepted male students this year for the first time since it was founded in 1921.
