Two Division III lacrosse coaches will be among inductees in November to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame – one in recognition for her impact on the game as a coach and the other for his achievements as a player.

Pat Genovese, whose William Smith teams have appeared in five Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship finals, and Jeff Long, the Ithaca men’s coach who was a three-time all-American at Navy, will be among eight inductees this year and join more than 325 lacrosse greats who have been inducted into the hall since 1957.

Though all five of Genovese’s finalists lost in the Division III championship game, she is a three-time Division III coach of the year and is tied with Navy’s Cindy Timchal for most coaching victories in men’s or women’s collegiate lacrosse (362).

“While her career win total is impressive, it’s her mentorship of thousands of Heron student-athletes, on and off the field, and the positive influence she has had on their growth that defines her as a truly great coach,” said Deb Steward, William Smith athletics director.

“The ripple effect of Pat’s coaching spreads through the lacrosse world as many of her former players have gone on to coach lacrosse at the youth, club, high school and collegiate level.”

Her protégés include current head coaches at Colorado College, Rensselaer and Smith. She has coached 94 all-Americans during her 36-year tenure.

Long, head coach at Ithaca for the past 22 seasons, starred at Navy during the mid-1970s, winning all-American honors three straight seasons beginning in 1975.

He remains the academy’s career leader in total points and assists and holds the single-season assists record.

Navy teammate Mike Buzzell, a previous hall of fame inductee, called Long “truly a great player and one of the best that has ever played the game.”

“I was always in awe to see his tremendous stick skills, shooting ability, speed, quickness, field vision and leadership displayed on the field,” Buzzell said. “He was one of the few players who could totally control every game he played and he was always a threat that teams feared.”

After Navy service, Long served on coaching staffs at Navy, Alfred, Washington and Lee, and Virginia before becoming head coach at Ithaca, where he recorded his 200th victory this year. He also assists with the school’s women’s soccer team.

Other hall of fame inductees this year are players Cherie Greer Brown of Virginia, Jessica Wilk Strosberg of Maryland, Kevin Lowe of Princeton, Mark Milton of Massachusetts and Todd Curry of Syracuse, and official Jennifer Miller O’Donnell.

The induction ceremony will be November 7 in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
