Though the Ladies did not dominate the entire season, the Kenyon women’s swimming team won its third consecutive and 23rd overall Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title in Minneapolis March 21. The Ladies tallied 560 points, nearly 100 more than second-place Emory’s 466.5. Denison took third place with 413 points.

The 1-2-3 finish for the three schools mirrored the 2008 results.

Kenyon has dominated Division III swimming: The Ladies won 17 consecutive titles from 1984 to 2000. The 2009 title came with five event wins: Tina Ertel in the 200-yard individual medley; Elizabeth Carlton in the 50-yard freestyle; Tracy Menzel in the 100-yard breaststroke; Carolyn Barer in the 200-yard backstroke and Alisa Vereshchagin in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Ladies did not win any relay titles, a break from tradition.

Several meet records were broken – in 12 of 18 swimming events in fact – which was expected because of advances in swimsuit technology within the last year. Emory’s Liz Horvat broke records in the 500-yard freestyle (preliminaries and finals), 400-yard individual medley and the 1,650-yard freestyle. Emory’s 200-yard freestyle and 800-ard freestyle relay teams broke records, as did Denison’s 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard individual medley relay teams.

Williams’ Logan Todhunger broke several records. In the 100-yard butterfly, she broke the meet record in the preliminaries and then again in the finals. In the 200-yard butterfly, her preliminary swim broke the meet record. Amherst’s Kendra Stern broke the meet’s 100-yard freestyle record, while Kenyon’s Elizabeth Carlton swam to a meet record in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries. Horvat, who won three total individual titles, earned swimmer of the year honors.

Divers Kelly Sonholz (Fredonia State, three-meter) and Erica Deur (Calvin, one-meter) also accumulated record point totals. Deur was named women’s diver of the year. Sonholz also won the one-meter title.
