Kenyon boosts men’s swim streak to 30

The NCAA News

Kenyon won its 30th consecutive Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title March 21, cruising to a 202-point margin over runner-up Emory at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Kenyon’s streak, the longest in any NCAA sport, began in 1980 and is older than the student-athletes who sustain it. Kenyon’s women’s swimming and diving team owns the next longest streak at 17, which spanned from 1984 to 2000. Methodist’s women’s golf team has the next longest active streak with 11 straight Division III titles from 1998-2008.

In addition to keeping their team winning streak alive, the Lords won four of five relays and set records in each (Denison set a meet record in the other). It was another fast meet featuring the new technical suits that were approved for competition this year. Meet records were set in 11 of the 18 swimming events. A dozen were set in last week’s Division II men’s championships.

This year’s relay times were particularly impressive, as all five dashed longstanding marks. Kenyon’s 200- and 400-freestyle win wiped out records the Lords had set in 1998. No other relay record had been set more recently than 2004.

Lords senior Matthew Harris was among the meet’s most significant performers. He swept the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events and swam on all four winning relay teams.

Two other Kenyon swimmers won individual titles, bracketing the freestyles, as Zach Turk won the shortest (50-yard freestyle) and Kegan Borland the longest (1,650-yard freestyle).

Kenyon started fast with a 43-point lead over Emory after the first day and then increased the margin to 137 points after Day 2.

Three non-Kenyon performers won two events each, including John Thomas of Johns Hopkins, who won the 100-yard backstroke and set a meet record in the 200-yard backstroke. St. Olaf’s Nelson Westby won the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley, while Merchant Marine’s Nicholas Halbach swept the one- and three-meter diving events.

Other meet records were set by Amherst’s Alex Fraser in the 500-yard freestyle, Pavel Buyanov of Staten Island in the 100-yard breaststroke, Alex Beyer of Washington-St. Louis in the 400-yard individual medley and Grove City’s Caleb Courage, who broke a 24-year old mark in the 100-yard freestyle by three hundredths of a second (43.60) in the preliminaries and then won the event in 43.62.

Emory’s second-place finish in the team standings matches the best in the history of the men’s program, a feat accomplished most recently in 2005.
