Illinois College honored a long-time team physician by renaming its annual IC Blue Classic – an indoor track and field meet that attracted 13 teams this year – for Dr. Jim Green.

The 1961 graduate of the school has served his alma mater in several capacities through four decades, ranging from service on the college’s board of trustees to joining with his family to help fund a sports court that can be used for volleyball matches.

“Dr. Green continues to be a great fan of all of Illinois College’s athletics teams and student-athletes,” track coach Mike Brooks said. “He supports every team in quiet ways such as providing athletics physicals for all student-athletes at minimal expense, and he has generously volunteered his time to serve as team physician for many of our home athletics contests.”

Green’s name long has been in the Illinois College track records book. He ran the 100-yard dash in a school-record time of 9.70 seconds as a student-athlete – a mark that predates current records in metric events.

The college also honored Green last year when it named its new all-weather surface at England Stadium in his honor.

School officials said Green has served hundreds of student-athletes and “countless men’s and women’s sports teams” as a team physician.
