A two-time Venezuelan Olympian serving on the Connecticut College athletics staff will be honored in his home country next month.

William Wuyke, a 20-year faculty member at the college who directs the school’s fitness center and coordinates its athletics strength and conditioning program, will be inducted into the Venezuelan Athletic Federation Hall of Fame.

Wuyke, who also won a 1,000-meter run title for Alabama in the 1984 Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships, placed ninth for Venezuela in the 800-meter run at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. He also ran in the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, after serving as his team’s flag bearer in the opening ceremonies.

He will visit Caracas, Venezuela, October 9-10 for the induction ceremonies.

“Every athlete’s dream is to make the Olympic Games,” he said. “To be recognized by my home country is another tremendous achievement. It’s going to be a big ceremony. I’m looking forward to celebrating this honor with friends.”

He remains involved in Venezuela’s Olympic efforts, serving as the country’s representative to the World Olympian’s Organization during last year’s Games in Beijing.

Wuyke has been director of the Connecticut College fitness center since 1993. Under his direction, the college recently completed construction of a new 10,000-square-foot facility. He also assisted in the planning and preparation for construction of the Lyn and David Silfen Track and Field in 1996.
