Swimming and diving coach Jack Groselle still is making waves in competitive swimming, 33 years after claiming a Division III individual championship for Hiram.

The freestyler, who coaches at his alma mater, broke two Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) world records for master’s competition during a recent competition in Indianapolis. It’s actually nothing new for the 55-year-old Groselle, who has held more than 30 world and national master’s swimming records.

During a USA Sectional Swim Meet March 26-29 at IUPUI, Groselle set a long-course world record in the 55-59 age group with a 2:07.12 time in the 200-meter freestyle.

“The entire experience was something that I’ll remember for a long time,” he said. “The swimmers and coaches were cheering me on knowing that I was attempting to break the record and that made all the difference in the swim.”

Groselle took that record from Jim McConica, a two-time NCAA University Division champion in the 200-yard freestyle (1971 and 1973) and also a member of four NCAA-champion freestyle relay teams at Southern California.

Two days later, Groselle claimed the age-group record in the 100-meter freestyle with a 57.85 time. He just missed claiming a third world mark, finishing .05 of a second shy of the current mark of 23.31 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle.

He has held world 100-meter long course freestyle records in each of four age groups – beginning with the 40-44 group and also claiming records in the 45-49 and 50-54 age groups before this year’s performance.

In 1976, Groselle won the 50-yard freestyle title at the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a time of 21.589 seconds. He ended his collegiate career as a two-time all-American after placing third in the inaugural Division III meet in 1975.

Groselle is in his second stint as swimming and diving coach at Hiram, where he led the program from 1988 to 1995, then returned to the post in 1999.
