Four nominated for Management Council terms

Four vacancies on the Division III Management Council will be filled when delegates to the NCAA Convention elect new members January 16.

Delegates will be asked to elect the nominees to four-year Council terms during the Division III business session at the Convention in Atlanta. The nominees include an institutional president, director of athletics, senior woman administrator and faculty athletics representative.

The nominees are:

  • Stanton Ching, chair of the department of chemistry and faculty athletics representative at Connecticut College. He has served on the college’s faculty since 1990, served as volunteer assistant women’s volleyball coach from 1992 to 1998, and became faculty athletics representative in 1994. Ching also served as interim director of athletics and chair of physical education in 2002-03.
  • Timothy Downes, director of athletics and recreation at Emory, where he has served since 2007. He also has served as athletics director at Caltech and Franklin & Marshall, and is a former chair of the Division III Membership Committee. He was the first commissioner of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in conjunction with his duties at Caltech.
  • Portia Lowe, associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Lake Forest, where she has been on the athletics staff since 2005. A former participant in the Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant Program, she also has served as coordinator of marketing, promotions and special events at Smith and as associate athletics director at Vassar. The former Trinity (Texas) basketball student-athlete participated in the first Division III Regional Leadership Conference in 2002.
  • Christopher Thomforde, president at Moravian and former president at Bethany (Kansas) and St. Olaf. The Yale Divinity School and Princeton Theological Seminary graduate also has held positions as a chaplain at Colgate and Susquehanna and served from 1978 to 1986 as pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dansville, New York. Thomforde captained the Princeton basketball team in the late 1960s, and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1967 with teammate and current Princeton Athletics Director Gary Walters.

 

The Council will be chaired again during 2010 by Lynn Oberbillig, director of athletics and Smith. Chris Martin, commissioner of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, will serve as vice chair.
