Misericordia senior third baseman Mike Murphy set a Division III record for hits in a single game last weekend when he collected eight hits in nine at-bats in a game at Polytechnic (New York).

Murphy hit safely in his first eight plate appearances during the game March 14 – including a triple and single in the first inning and six more singles through the eighth inning – before grounding out in his final at-bat in the ninth inning.

The previous record of seven hits in a game was held by seven different individuals and last was matched in 2002 by Jeff Moore of York (Pennsylvania). The all-divisions record of nine hits in a game is held by John McBroom of Air Force, who went 9-for-9 in a 1967 game against Colorado College.

Murphy is the second Misericordia baseball player to claim a place in Division III baseball individual records.

Former Misericordia first baseman Tim Arnold drew six walks against King’s  (Pennsylvania) in 1995 without swinging at a single pitch. He also shares the single-game record for walks with three other players.
