Division III rewind

Following is a summary of Division III news from the week of December 14-18.

  • The nine Division III women’s programs competing in the Collegiate Water Polo Association are forming a separate competitive level within the conference.
  • Kent Raymond, a basketball student-athlete at Wheaton (Illinois), is among the 2010 NCAA Top VIII Award winners who will be honored at the NCAA Convention in Atlanta next month.
  • Legendary athletic trainer Larry Gardner, who worked for two Super Bowl champion teams and in sports ranging from rodeo to auto racing before starting Texas-Dallas’ athletic training program, is retiring.
  • Joan Sitterly, a member of the Division III Management Council, announced plans to retire as director of athletics at Cortland State in late February.
  • Marywood will sponsor men’s and women’s swimming and diving as a varsity sport beginning in 2010-11, following completion of its new aquatics center.
