Division III rewind

Following is a summary of Division III news from the week of September 21-25.

  • Requests for sport-specific actions are prompting the Division III Championships Committee to broadly address several concerns – including some reductions in at-large berths in championships that are linked to recent expansion of automatic qualification.
  • In 1963, Dick Wackar resurrected the varsity football program at Rowan by acquiring hip and shoulder pads from a defunct semipro team and getting a good deal from a dairy farm on sod for a new field.
  • Macalester’s Stephanie Schleuder became the 23rd coach in any NCAA division to reach the 700-wins milestone in women’s volleyball on September 18.
  • Two-time Olympian William Wuyke, now serving on the Connecticut College athletics staff, will be inducted next month into the Venezuelan Athletic Federation Hall of Fame.
  • The NCAA is soliciting additional nominations by October 23 for a January 2010 vacancy on the Division III Management Council.
