Division III rewind

Following is a summary of Division III news from the week of October 12-16.

  • The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel agreed to delay requiring Division III institutions to provide a visible backboard light in basketball and a wireless referee microphone in football until 2011-12.
  • The Division III Management Council will review the status of current initiatives during its October 19-20 meeting in Indianapolis, including pilot programs just now beginning to collect academic data and just now ending to test the effectiveness of drug-education and testing programs.
  • Earlham will join the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference beginning in 2010-11, following a 20-year affiliation with the North Coast Athletic Conference.
  • The Immaculata women’s basketball team will make its second appearance at Madison Square Garden – nearly 35 years after playing the first women’s game ever in the New York City arena.
  • NCAA Woman of the Year Top 30 nominee Tanesha Hughes, a three-sport student-athlete representing the Midwest Conference and Monmouth (Illinois), and Monmouth women’s basketball coach Melissa Jones Bittner are believed to be the first student-athlete/coach tandem to earn places in the field of Woman of the Year semifinalists.
