York (New York) will sponsor women’s tennis beginning this fall, giving the school its 16th varsity sport.

The Lady Cardinals will play a full conference schedule along with a few nonconference matches. York was the only member of the City University of New York Athletic Conference that didn’t sponsor the sport.

Men’s tennis coach Greg Jackson will take on the coaching duties for the women’s team.

“There has been a demand for women’s tennis around campus for a few years now, so we decided to move forward with it,” said Ronald St. John, York athletics director. “Hopefully it will be the first of many sports to be added in the future.”
