The opening this month of new athletics facilities at Brooklyn will permit the school to resurrect its men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.

The programs, which have been on hiatus since 2004 after losing their home pool due to campus construction, will be reborn as club programs this year in the 75-foot pool in Brooklyn’s new West Quad.

The swim teams will resume varsity status beginning in 2010-11.

The West Quad is the new home of Brooklyn’s recreation, intramurals and athletics department, and its athletics facilities are expected to be completed by the end of this month. Those facilities also include a new gymnasium, multipurpose/volleyball room and new locker and equipment facilities, as well as a fitness center, dance studio and racquetball and squash courts.

“The building is fabulous,” said Bruce Filosa, Brooklyn director of athletics. “When you enter, there is an unavoidable sense of excitement, of radiance, of beauty. It’s energizing. The space is functional and state-of-the-art. Our students now have the best recreation and athletics facilities in all of (the City University of New York).”

Brooklyn announced the hiring in late July of former Old Dominion swimming student-athlete Eric Mitchell as head swimming coach.
