If anyone wants to know what Salem, Virginia, is like in the month of March, talk to the Washington-St. Louis men’s basketball team.

The Bears have enjoyed their time in the city the last two years, especially bringing home the spoils that come with winning consecutive Division III championships.

Washington-St. Louis added another title by downing Richard Stockton, 61-52, in the Division III final Saturday night.

Sean Wallis led the Bears with 16 points and 10 assists, and Tyler Nading contributed a game-high 20 points in the championship game.

“As you have found out all year long with this team, we find ways to win,” said Washington-St. Louis Coach Mark Edwards. “It’s great to be back to the city of Salem, but even greater to walk out of here with the big trophy.”

The Bears, which finished the season with a school-high 29-2 record, won their 13th straight postseason game. They are also the fourth NCAA Division III team to repeat as national champions, joining North Park (1978-80), Wisconsin-Platteville (1998-99) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2004-05).

Wallis was named the most outstanding player of the tournament after averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 assists per game during the finals. He set a single-season program record with 251 assists and owns the school record for career assists with 566.

Nading, who was 9-for-11 from the field in the championship game, finished his career ranked third on the career scoring list with 1,552 points.

“Richard Stockton’s aggressiveness made them susceptible to me leaking toward the basket,” Nading said. “My teammates did a great job finding me. This is the best way to go out as a senior. This year’s team had a completely new identity, and I am so happy for all of our teammates.”

Santini Lancioni scored 19 points to lead Richard Stockton (30-3), which had its 18-game winning streak snapped. But it took Lancioni 21 shots to produce his point production.

The Ospreys struggled shooting the basketball finishing 19-for-60 (.317) from the field in the championship game.
