St. Augustine‘s scores No. 2 all-time point total
Falcons claim fourth straight title

The NCAA News

St. Augustine’s was already good at this business of winning indoor track championships, but the Falcons appear to be getting better at it.

Getting big points from both the track and the field, St. Augustine’s soared to its fourth consecutive championship Saturday. The Falcons finished with 105 points, topping Adams State’s 80.

Ten-time all-American Joe Kindred got the ball rolling Friday with wins in the high jump and long jump – a first in Division II championship history -- and he contributed again Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.

But Kindred was free from a one-man show as the Falcons took a pair of other individual titles to go along with the 1,600-meter relay championship and a slew of other high finishes.

Both of the other wins came from Josh Scott. The sophomore nipped teammate Dennis Boone at the tape to win the 200-meter dash in 21.52 seconds and followed that with a winning time of 47.33 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

St. Augustine’s was not limited to the speed events. The Falcons also collected eight big points from shot putter Brandon Quarles, who finished second behind Matt Gersick of Adams State.

If the margin of victory seems impressive, that’s because it is. The 105 points was the second-most by a men’s Division II team champion (132 by Abilene Christian in 1997).

“I feel really good about this weekend’s performances because we don’t have a track to run on right now and we are doing a lot of stuff on grass and around the city,” said coach George Williams. “We get a chance to go to North Carolina State sometimes, so before this meet we have only been on a track three times.”

If they were rusty, they didn’t show it. The Falcons held a nine-point lead after Day 1 and relinquished it Saturday after 10 events to Adams State. However, they surged back into the lead when Boone and Ramon Gittens teamed for a 2-3 finish in the 60-meter dash. After that Scott led the Falcons to 1-2-4 and 1-3 finishes in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and the rout was on.

All of that speed came together one last time when the Falcons’ 1,600-meter relay team of Rashaud Johnston, Antonio Abbey, Travon Lee and Scott cruised to an easy win. Their time was 3:12.42.

While St. Augustine’s dominated the meet, several other athletes accomplished some especially notable achievements.

Metro  State junior Anthony Luna checked in with a 1:51.99 winning time in the  800-meter dash to earn the Roadrunners’ first individual track title. Also, Ashland’s Dan Tierney flew past the pole vault field, clearing 17 feet, 9 inches and winning by nearly a foot. Division II’s first heptathlon went to Camille Vandendries of Abilene Christian, who tallied 5,448 points.

But the day belonged to St. Augustine’s, so much so that Williams had trouble picking a key to victory.

“I think Joe Kindred stepped up. He won the long and the high jump,” Williams said. “Josh Scott definitely showed up. He was on the 400, 200 and he anchored the 4x4. A lot of people showed up. National championships are like that; you get bonuses and you give away bonuses. This time we got the extra bonuses.”
