Georgia College President Dorothy Leland and Northwest Missouri State Athletics Director Bob Boerigter have been appointed to the Division II Presidents and Management Councils, respectively, effective immediately.

Both Leland and Boerigter fill recently vacated positions. Thomas Harden, former president at Clayton State, was named chancellor at Wisconsin-Green Bay while Management Council member Sallie Beard announced her retirement as athletics director at Missouri Southern State.

Leland, who represents Region 2 on the Presidents Council, has been president at Georgia College since January 1, 2004. Before her appointment there, Leland served as vice president of the Boca Raton Campus of Florida Atlantic University. She also served as associate provost and executive director of university strategic planning and as director of the Women’s Studies Center at Florida Atlantic.

Leland is a graduate of Purdue, where she earned a B.A. in English in 1971, a master’s degree in American studies in 1973 and a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1979. She went on to hold faculty positions at Cal State Northridge, Cal State Chico and UC Santa Cruz. She returned to Purdue in 1993 as co-director of its doctoral program in philosophy and literature and as an assistant professor in the philosophy department.

Boerigter is the Management Council’s new representative from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, replacing Missouri Southern State AD Sallie Beard, who announced her retirement from intercollegiate athletics recently. Boerigter will complete the remainder of Beard’s term, beginning immediately and ending in January 2010. He will then automatically serve a full four-year term of office, which will conclude in January 2014.

Boerigter has served as the AD at Northwest Missouri State since May 2001. He was at Hastings (Nebraska) College for 13 years before that. He also has held administrative and coaching positions at Adams State, Northwestern College (Orange City, Iowa) and Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington.

A former National Athletics Administrator of the Year, Boerigter is a former chair of the NCAA Division II Football Committee and is a member of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern College. He also has a master’s degree from the Northern Colorado and a doctorate from Utah.
