Drury dominated the field in winning its second Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title in three years Saturday night at the Houston Wellness and Recreation Center.

The Panthers set 11 NCAA records in a meet that coaches correctly predicted beforehand “would be like no other” and cruised to a 65-point win over runner-up Wayne State and a 193.5-point margin over third-place UC San Diego.

A number of swimmers starred for the Panthers, especially sophomore Yuan Qing Li, who set meet records in the 400-yard individual medley, the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke. She also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley and anchored Drury’s winning 200- and 800-yard medley relay teams, both of which set records. Qing Li also swam the third leg in the Panthers’ winning 400-freestyle relay.

Teammate Jing Hua set a record in the 100-yard backstroke, won the 100-yard freestyle and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle along with participating on the Panthers’ winning 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays.

Drury’s Janelle Slattery won the 100-yard butterfly in record time and finished second to Hua in the 100 back and to Qing Li in the 200 back. She also swam leadoff on Drury’s winning 400 medley relay team and the second leg of the winning 800 free.

Enuate Garro also won for Drury in the 50-yard freestyle, setting a record in the preliminaries along the way, and Erin Dolan beat the field by more than four seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Drury was the heavy favorite coming into the meet and the Panthers didn’t disappoint. Drury coach Brian Reynolds, whose men’s team also won the team title this year, said his squad doesn’t mind having a target on their backs.

“It’s really a process,” he said. “We start from day one and get them to look ahead to the nationals. We don’t mind that we are going to be the heavy favorite, because we enjoy that.”

The Panthers actually started the meet slowly, unofficially winning the 200-yard medley relay on opening day before being disqualified for an early exchange. The Panthers came back to win the 200-yard freestyle relay on Thursday, setting a meet record, and then finished Thursday by winning the 400 medley, also in record time. The Panthers also set a record in Friday’s 800 free and wrapped up the meet with a record-setting performance in the 400 free.

Wayne State, which was seeking its first team title, got a big meet from distance freestyler Ashley St. Andrew, who swept the 1,000- and 500-yard events, and placed second in the 1,650 and fourth in the 200.

The distance freestyles were particularly good for the Warriors in fact as they scored 60 points in the 1,650, 69 in the 1,000 and 58 in the 500. The combined 187 points was more than a third of the Warriors’ team total.

Sophomore Courtney Roberts gave the Warriors a boost by winning the 100-yard breaststroke by just five hundredths of a second over UC San Diego’s Kendall Bohn and by eight hundredths over Clarion’s Denise Simens.

In the relays, Wayne State finished second in the 200 medley, fourth in the 400 medley and fifth in the 800 free after a disappointing DQ in the prelims of the 200 free on Day 2.

Other notable meet performances came from Truman’s Kate Aherne, who won the 200-yard individual medley and finished second to Drury’s Garro in the 50 free by one one-hundredth of a second. Aherne also placed second in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 free.

Tampa’s Jessie Bardin won the 200-yard freestyle and came close to Loni Burton’s four-year-old record in doing so. Bardin also added a third-place finish in the 500 free.

Third-place UC San Diego won the 200-yard medley relay and placed second in the 200- and 800-yard freestyle relays and third in the 400 free relay. Bohn successfully defended her 200-yard breaststroke title, and the Tritons’ Alexandra Henley contributed third- and sixth-place finishes in the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, respectively, as well as fifth places in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke.

In diving, Clarion sophomore Kayla Kelosky claimed both the one- and three-meter titles.
