Dixie State takes TV hoops opener

Viewers were treated to a thriller in the opener of Division II’s nine-game regular-season men’s and women’s basketball package with CBS College Sports Network January 3 as host Dixie State’s men’s team edged Chaminade, 66-64.

The Pacific West Conference opener for both teams featured seven lead changes and eight three-pointers by both teams. Chaminade led, 27-25, at the half but was in constant foul trouble and eventually succumbed to a Dixie State defense that forced 16 turnovers. Tom Whitehead led Dixie State (6-6, 1-0) with 18 points, while Joel Smith scored a game-high 26 for Chaminade (3-6, 0-1).

The live Division II broadcasts include five men’s and four women’s games in the third year of the television agreement between Division II and CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV). In the three years of the agreement, alomst 70 different schools and all conferences have been represented.

The eight remaining broadcasts are scheduled for the following dates (all times are Eastern). The broadcasts will also be syndicated through regional sports networks and made available via broadband at www.ncaa.com.

Saturday, February 14 – Colorado Christian at Metropolitan State, 3 p.m.

Saturday, February 21 – Northwest Missouri State at Central Missouri, noon

Saturday, February 28 – Wheeling Jesuit at West Liberty State, 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Saturday, January 10 – Florida Southern at Barry, 1 p.m.

Saturday, January 17 – East Stroudsburg at Shippensburg, 1 p.m.

Saturday, January 24 – Incarnate Word at Saint Mary’s (Texas), 3 p.m.

Saturday, February 7 – Northwest Nazarene at Seattle Pacific, 3 p.m.
