The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division II news from the week of May 11-15.

  • Division II is joining Division I in building a new sport. Sand volleyball, which Division II approved as an emerging sport for women at the 2009 NCAA Convention, can be used to meet sport-sponsorship minimums beginning August 1, 2010. By then, playing rules, playing and practice season policies and financial aid parameters, among others, will have to be set. While the NCAA is early in the sand game, here’s what we know so far.
  • Philadelphia University men’s basketball coach Herb Magee is getting an honorary degree from the school he’s been at for 50 years.
  • Drury is building a new facility for its basketball and volleyball teams.
  • When a Maryville (Missouri) baseball student-athlete’s family home burned, teammates pitched in to help him stay on the squad.
