Concepts from the Life in the Balance initiative could turn into legislative proposals if they clear the Division II Presidents Council meeting that begins Wednesday night in Indianapolis.

Concepts that call for a later reporting date for fall-sport student-athletes, a seven-day dead period for winter sports and contest reductions in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, field hockey, women’s volleyball, baseball, and softball have made their way through the governance structure but will not become official Convention legislation until the presidents agree to sponsor them.

The Presidents Council will have the opportunity to adjust the Life in the Balance concepts if so choose. At the recent Division II Management Council meeting, members discussed (but stopped short of) adding men’s and women’s basketball reductions to the mix. Management Council members also wondered whether the winter-sports dead period gave schools enough flexibility in scheduling.

The Presidents Council also will review other legislative possibilities, including a playing-and-practice-season model for the emerging sport of sand volleyball.

In addition, the presidents plan to conduct an “open forum,” time permitting, to discuss the impact of the economic environment on Division II athletics.
