Blue Tigers again atop Division II women’s track

The NCAA News

Lincoln (Missouri) overcame a 22-point deficit on the final day of the Division II Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, along with a midday lightning storm that delayed competition Saturday.

But the Blue Tigers waited out the storm, then flashed some lightning of their own in rallying to their sixth team title in seven years.

Lincoln rallied on the last day to catch host Angelo State with four finalists scoring in the 200-meter run. They then beat the Rambelles head-to-head in the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay to recapture the team crown, which they surrendered last year to Abilene Christian.

Freshman Samoy Hackett swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes as the Blue Tigers collected 42 of their 85 points in those events alone (21 in each race).

Lincoln also swept the relay events − finishing less than two seconds ahead of Angelo State in the 4x400 while clinging to one-point lead entering the event – and collected an opening-day long-jump victory by AnnaKay Campbell, who also finished second in the heptathlon.

Hackett was a unstoppable presence throughout the last day of the meet, running the second leg of the 4x100 relay as Lincoln scored its first points in the storm-delayed afternoon events, then tying the meet record in the 100-meter dash that had been set only two days earlier in preliminaries by defending event champion Barbara Pierre from Saint Augustine’s.

With their time of 11.18 seconds, Hackett and Pierre both broke a 16-year-old record held by Norfolk State’s Chandra Sturrup.

By beating Pierre in the final by four-hundredths of a second, Hackett claimed two extra points that ultimately proved crucial in the team competition.

Lincoln’s dominance in the sprints offset Angelo State’s one-two punch of senior Adree Lakey and sophomore Aisha Adams, who contributed 55 of the Rambelles’ 82 points (in addition to the eight points that Adams helped collect in the 1,600-meter relay).

Lakey’s 29 points came in the throws, where she won the shot put, finished second in the discus, third in the hammer and fourth in the javelin throw. The senior ended her career with five outdoor titles, including three straight shot-put crowns.

Adams outdueled Lincoln’s Campbell in the heptathlon and finished second in the long jump and 400-meter hurdles for her 26 points.

The result was Angelo State’s best placement in championships history, though it nearly was an even better finish.

“Obviously, it was a little disappointing,” Angelo State coach James Reid told the San Angelo (Texas) Standard-Times. “We wanted to be No. 1. But we didn’t want it to let it take away from an extremely successful season. I would be lying if I said there wasn’t any disappointment. But we had some school records broken and a lot of (personal records).”

The weekend also produced three new Division II meet marks. Minnesota State Mankato pole vaulter Katelin Rains and Johnson C. Smith hurdler Shermaine Williams joined Hackett and Pierre in the championships records book.

Rains’ leap of 13 feet, 7 inches (4.14 meters), beat the mark set last year by Minnesota State Moorhead’s Jennifer Hensel, who finished third this year. Williams toppled a 10-year-old mark held by Abilene Christian’s Delloreen Ennis-London in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 12.95 seconds.

Other noteworthy individual performances were turned in by Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler, who added a 1,500-meter run crown to her cross country victory last fall and her double win in the mile and 5,000-meter run at the indoor championships in March, and Abilene Christian’s Linda Brivule, who repeated as javelin champion.
