Washington sweeps Florida in WCWS final

Washington defeated top-ranked Florida, 3-2, Tuesday night to sweep the best-of-three finals in the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Washington, 51-12, rode the right arm of pitcher Danielle Lawrie for most of its tour across America in which it traveled to Massachusetts for regional play and then to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in the super regional. In all, the Huskies traveled 6,899 miles en route to the national championship.

Lawrie threw all 44⅔ innings of Washington’s stay in Oklahoma City, capping things off by striking out Florida’s Ali Gardiner with the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh inning. The junior pitcher’s WCWS-leading 49th strikeout put the Huskies into celebration mode.

“I knew when we recruited Danielle Lawrie’s class that we were going to have the potential to do this,” said Washington coach Heather Tarr, who also played for the Huskies when the program started in 1993. “We have an amazing group of women who went through the toughest road as anyone had to hoe to get here.”

ESPN2’s broadcast crew said the third-seeded Huskies were required to travel because their home field doesn’t have lights. It was also mentioned that a fund-raising campaign will be initiated to attempt to rectify that situation.

The loss was a bitter one for the Gators, who finished the season 63-5, with three of the losses coming to Washington.

“This will go down as one of the best teams in the sport of softball without winning a championship,” said Florida Coach Tim Walton. “But this is a great team, and to win 132 games with only 10 defeats in two seasons, is tremendous.”

Florida, which dropped Game 1 of the championship series 8-0 on Monday, jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning against Lawrie.

Aja Paculba led the game off with a triple and scored and passed ball. Megan Bush added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give the Gators the early momentum.

Washington responded quickly as a run-scoring single by Lawrie, the tournament’s most outstanding player, and a wild pitch tied the score at 2.

Washington’s Kimi Pohlman scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third when Florida pitcher Stacey Nelson was unable to handle a dribbler near the mound.

Lawrie had to endure some tense moments in the final inning after giving up a double by Francesca Enea.

“I thought for a second it might have been out,” Lawrie said. “But when they just had a runner on second, I was just thinking, ‘No, no, no. We have worked too hard for this to happen right now. I like to keep it interesting.”

After the final out, the Huskies were able to enjoy the last part of their cross-country odyssey.
