Wagner will eliminate its women’s volleyball and men’s wrestling teams in the 2009-10 year, reducing its sport sponsorship to 20.

Athletics Director Walt Hameline cited a variety of factors, including financial resources, facilities and conference sponsorship. The Northeast Conference does not sponsor wrestling.

“It is with regret that we take this action,” Hameline said. “There were a variety of factors that went into a decision that, while painful to those affected, was necessary. Student-athletes impacted by this decision will continue to receive whatever financial aid package is currently in place for him or her.”

The school will support the student-athletes affected by the decision.

“While we hope that all of the affected student-athletes remain a student here at Wagner, the athletics department will assist in the process of any student-athlete who expresses interest in transferring to another institution,” Hameline said.
