Virginia women’s basketball coach Debbie Ryan collected her 700th career victory November 13 when the Cavaliers defeated UMBC, 68-57, in Baltimore.

Ryan is the 12th coach to reach the milestone and joins six other active coaches with 700 wins.

“I’m proud for the University of Virginia, and I’m proud for my players,” Ryan said. “Those wins belong to the players, the coaches who have coached with me, the administration and the University of Virginia.”

After a victory over Manhattan on November 15, Ryan’s record stands at 701-298. She has spent 32 years leading the Cavaliers and earned 23 berths in the NCAA tournament, including three consecutive appearances in the Final Four in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

Ryan has coached the USA Basketball women’s teams and the United States Junior National Team. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame last year. She played collegiate basketball at Ursinus.
